If you have an iPad or iPod, you’ll definitely want to think about this baby monitor.

The main draw of the Withings Smart Baby Monitor is that it’s completely integrated for iOS devices such as the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It’s designed so that the range is limitless: when you’re within close range of the monitor—in the same house—you can connect directly to the Smart baby monitor over bluetooth. However, when you’re away from home you can also access the monitor using either wi-fi or a cellular (3G) connection, which is extremely convenient.

The Smart baby monitor works with an unlimited number of devices. If both parents have an iPhone, iPad or iPod, they can both view and control the monitor from anywhere in the home or elsewhere. It’s a nice way to get extra use out of your iOS device and not have to buy a baby monitor with multiple units.

Remote Access: View the Monitor From Anywhere in the World

The excellent thing about the Withings Smart baby monitor is that it allows you to view a real-time feed of what the monitor captures from anywhere that you have internet access. As long as your iOS device can access the internet, you’ll be able to see what’s happening at home. This has a number of great uses, as you can probably imagine.

Let’s say you’re a working parent and have a nanny watch your child during the day. You might be concerned about safety—well, the Withings Smart Baby Monitor is a perfect solution. If you place the monitor device in a location that can get a view of the room, you can watch everything that happens remotely, in real time. It’s a great way to give yourself peace of mind and be able to work away from home without worrying about your child. I suppose that if you wanted to, you could even use it as a remote house security camera.

The video quality when used in remote mode over wi-fi is pretty good. Everything is clear and the controls for adjusting the camera work fine. The quality is among the best there is when it comes to video baby monitors. When used in remote mode, you are able to control anything on the monitor that you could control directly. Not only can you adjust the camera, but you can also play the built-in lullabies, talk to your baby, switch the light on and off, etc.

At the time of this review, you currently get 15 minutes of remote viewing time per day. In the near future, Withings promises that you’ll soon be able to extend this period so that you can use the remote viewing option for a longer period of time.

Setting up the Withings Smart Baby Monitor: Easy & Automatic

You might be slightly worried about the idea of setting up wi-fi, remote viewing, and all of that fancy stuff. You don’t have to worry, though! Withings has done a great job in making their Smart baby monitor very easy to use. While it’s slightly more involved than other video baby monitors, that’s to be expected given the technology we’re working with. While similar “away from home” baby monitors require some in-depth technical knowledge to get setup and working properly, the Smart baby monitor is mostly automatic – kudos to Withings for that.

Extra Features: Monitor Temperature and More

Not only does the Withings Smart baby monitor work as a video monitor, but it also has other features as well. Among these is a temperature and humidity monitor, which shows you the exact temperature and humidity level of your baby’s room—this works both locally and through the remote viewing mode.

It also has a night vision mode that allows you to see your baby even in darkness. Like most video baby monitors with night vision, the video quality is reduced a lot when in this mode, but it’s still good enough that you can see what is happening. The night vision mode is automatic; as soon as the light goes out, the monitor will detect that and switch into night vision mode.

You can also monitor your baby’s movement, too. This feature, as well as the other monitoring features, can be setup so that it will only alert you when your baby moves a lot. It won’t trigger with just slight movements, which is good because it might drive you crazy if it did.

Finally, it also has an audio monitor. This will let you know if your baby is crying or not, and as a bonus, you can also communicate 2-ways and talk to your baby through your device. That’s pretty neat.

You are able to set an alarm or alert for all of the different monitor types. For example, you can set it up so that it will alert you if the temperature in the room drops or rises to a certain range. Or, you can have it alert you if your baby wakes up and starts crying. This is a nice feature because it means that you don’t have to watch the monitor 24/7, but you can have peace of mind and know that it will let you know if your baby wakes up or starts crying.
