Job Description

Position: Safety Case Author – Nuclear
Location: Harwell, Oxfordshire
Start: ASAP
Duration: Minimum 2 Years
Role: Contract
Rate: £55 per hour (Negotiable)
BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Safety Case Author, Nuclear, Contact, Oxfordshire
Our client is a rapidly growing safety, risk and reliability engineering consultancy with clients in the marine, oil and gas, defence, nuclear, rail transportation and renewables industries.
They are currently looking for a Safety Case Author to work at their client site in Oxfordshire where you will support an existing team of Authors on a long term project.
RSRL is producing a new Category 1 Operational Safety Case (OSC) for the Remote Handled ILW operations at B462, Harwell. Remote handled ILW operations within B462 are currently covered by several safety cases/significant modifications, one of which reaches the end of its 10 year period of validity in March 2014.
Rather than subject this one safety case to a Periodic Review of Safety, RSRL have chosen to take this opportunity to produce a new safety case which better reflects in its scope the grouping of operations within the facility i.e. one safety case for all the remote handled work. This will be clearer to work to and modify going forward.
The new B462 RHILW OSC draws information from the existing safety cases/significant modifications for this facility - reviewing, revalidating or rewriting them. Particular focus will be on reviewing the suitability of the HAZANs against modern standards, current plant status and operation.
Objective:
An approved Operational Safety Case for B462 Remote Handled Intermediate Level Waste adopted by 31 March 2014.
Qualifications, Skills and/or Experience Required:
Our client is looking for a Safety Case Author with demonstrable technical experience in HAZAN production and reconciliation of claims made in HAZANs on engineered and human controls with the conclusions of Human Factors Assessment and Engineering Substantiation.
As a minimum, the Safety Case Author is required to have 5 years’ experience in the production of nuclear safety cases.
Experience of Periodic Review of Safety would be beneficial but is not essential.
Knowledge of the Harwell’s safety case process will be an advantage but is not essential.
Direct contact with facility staff etc., to correctly understand the circumstances and to agree scope, timescales, gather information etc. for the work will be required. Hence excellent people and communication skills are essential.
Scope of Work:
Our client requires one experienced Safety Case Author, full time, to complement the existing Nuclear Safety Team until the end of March 2014. The support is required for a long term project to produce an operational safety case.
The work will include but not be limited to:
• Review and re-write of HAZANs, including definition of Engineering Substantiation and Human Factors requirements.
• Production of Safety Case Support Files e.g. Plant Description, Operational History etc.
• Production of Top Tier Safety Report
Reporting:
The existing team comprises 3 safety case authors reporting to the RSRL Safety Case Project Manager. The additional safety case author (the subject of this task order) will also report to the RSRL Safety Case Project Manager.
Logistics:
The author will be based at the Harwell site. Due to the nature of the project i.e. the need to access a large amount of existing documentation, undertake extensive plant visits, the author will need to spend the majority of time at the Harwell site. Some work may be carried out from our clients premises subject to agreement.
